Overview
These questions ask who may do what, under whose supervision, by what delivery model and with which duties. The answer usually follows from four anchors: the ASHA Code of Ethics, ASHA's certification standards and scope documents, state law (licensure, reporting), and the client's welfare. ASHA Code of Ethics covers the ethical principles in depth; Key Legislation covers IDEA, Section 504, HIPAA, FERPA and Medicare; Treatment Planning & Documentation covers goals and notes.
Credentials and Scope

ASHA's Scope of Practice in Speech-Language Pathology lists the areas SLPs serve (speech, language, fluency, voice and resonance, swallowing and feeding, cognition, hearing as it relates to communication, AAC) and the roles they hold (prevention, screening, assessment, treatment, counseling, advocacy, research, supervision). SLPs may screen hearing but do not diagnose hearing loss; they may not prescribe medication.
